No, the grade system is not an actual course or a program. It only provides details of the syllabus; the songs list, technical exercises, theory etc. that has to be learnt to take up a grade exam. Developing good music performance skills require effective programs and training from a professional system.

Yes. For RSL grade certification it is mandatory to take the grade exams.

It's important to note that developing strong music performance skills and certification are not directly connected. Grade exams and certification are part of a long-term plan when learning a musical instrument, which is taken as and when required. Students can even choose to take grade exams independently at any time, even without being enrolled in formal classes. Completing certification up to the grade 8 usually takes between 5 to 8 years. It’s equally important to understand that each grade is a complete and valuable achievement on its own. Students do not need to view Grade 8 as the only goal. Completing even the Grade 1 builds confidence, structured learning habits, and provides internationally recognized certification — making the overall journey achievable, motivating, and enjoyable, one grade at a time.

Yes. The RSL grade exam fee starts at approximately Rs 5,600 for Grade 1 and increases with higher grades.

There is absolutely no age limit. The grade exam and certification is in fact a motivating factor.
